It costs £950. Takes ten minutes. And sounds utterly terrifying

Nipping out for a spot of laser is your new age-proofing secret weapon if you want to look good but not ‘done’.

Laser rejuvenation used to mean going into hiding for weeks and saying goodbye to the top layer of your skin (the old, ablative CO2 lasers worked — very effectively, it has to be said — like paint stripper).

Now the latest lasers can achieve results faster, with minimal downtime and pinpoint precision at different depths in the skin. They are the Swiss Army knives of ageing, getting to work on pretty much any skin concern you have.

The newest BBL (BroadBand Light) Laser claims to be the most powerful form of IPL (intense pulsed light) around, delivering it at four times the speed of traditional lasers. It can zap sun damage, redness, acne scarring and improve your skin texture in just one or two sessions.

There are only a handful in the country at the moment — and they’re getting doctors very excited.

Lasers can lift your lashes in your lunch hour or zap your tummy fat while you snooze.I recently shed my four remaining lockdown pounds and dropped four centimetres from my midriff while dozing during a painless laser treatment at a Dr Medispa clinic in London.

If you want to look slimmer or younger without resorting to the needle, today’s lasers have plenty to offer.

‘For people averse to the idea of injecting substances into the skin, lasers offer the opportunity to reverse some of the signs of ageing in a more «natural» way,’ explains aesthetic doctor David Jack. ‘There is practically no risk of looking odd with laser treatments, unless you are unfortunate enough to get a burn, which is rare.’

Appearing odd is a particular worry when it comes to lips.No one wants to end up with a trout pout.

Enter the new laser lip lift, invented by aesthetic doctor Tijion Esho. He’s known as the ‘king of lips’ for his subtle nano-droplet method of injecting filler.

He came up with the laser lip lift as an option for people like me who want a no-needle alternative.

‘I’m always looking at how I can improve the lip augmentation technique to make it safe and get more natural results,’ he says. While he’s a master of injecting, there’s still a stigma attached to lip fillers, he says. He’s treated the faces of numerous celebrities, but none of his VIPs has talked publicly about having their lips done.

The laser lip lift has none of the negative connotations, is needle-free and promises natural results in ten minutes with no downtime or elaborate aftercare.

And there’s no chance of overdoing it, says Dr Esho, because any added volume will be limited to what my body will naturally produce — the laser will be stimulating my own collagen-making fibroblasts over the next six weeks or so.

Nor will it change the shape of my lips, which I’m pretty happy with anyway. My only question is, will I actually see a difference?

‘If you want to be the next Kylie Jenner [famed for her sausagey lip fillers] this treatment isn’t for you. It’s about giving natural results and rejuvenating the area, not enhancing them into a duck or trout pout,’ he reassures me.It will merely ‘improve the architecture’ of what I already have.

Dr Esho has no less than 14 lasers in his clinic, and the one being used on my lips — the Alma Laser — is his newest toy. It’s a hybrid laser that combines two forms of energy (fractional CO2 and 1,570 nm wavelengths) to deliver the holy grail of ‘maximum results, minimum downtime’.

It’s the first time a laser has been used on the lips as an anti-ageing treatment — the latest lasers are less of a blunt instrument, so are better for treating delicate areas.

Previously, the only way to tweak lips was with needles: via fillers, Botox or microneedling.Dr Esho was already using the laser to treat barcode lines around the lips. It got him thinking that maybe it would work on the lips themselves, too.

Before getting the lip treatment

After getting the new laser lip lift

The treatment doesn’t change the shape of your lips, and Dr Esho said: ‘If you want to be the next Kylie Jenner [famed for her sausagey lip fillers] this treatment isn’t for you’

In trials, he started to see improvements, ‘not just in the surface quality of the tissue, but in the volume of the lip itself’.

Granted, some of the volume I’ll get will be temporary swelling from the procedure.‘But we found that, with cumulative sessions, people were improving their volume and they felt their lips looked fuller,’ he adds.

Ideally, I’d keep coming six times a year — this is a slow and steady way to hold back the years — but I should see an immediate improvement in some of the common signs of lip ageing: barcode lines, lip wrinkles and a damaged skin barrier that makes your lips dry and less plump.

My lips should also look smoother and my lipstick will sit better.

I sit back in the chair and makeup am a little nervous when he tells me that the Alma is so powerful it can cut the skin. (It is used to remove growths, too.) He tested it on a wooden spatula, he says, and it burst into flames.

However, he adds, the machine is ‘idiot proof’ thanks to pre-set functions that have been researched and deemed as being safe for your skin type (including if you have darker skin or a tan).I’m still trusting him to press the right buttons though!

We put on our dark glasses as he shines the probe on my lips, first going over the surface and then around the border. It feels hot and prickly and a little uncomfortable, but it is over in five minutes.

Ideally, you should get the treatment six times a year, as a slow and steady way to hold back the years

Ideally, you should get the treatment six times a year, as a slow and steady way to hold back the years

In the mirror, I can see tiny white dots on my lips, where the fractional CO2 energy has made micro-channels.These radiate the energy to the surrounding area. (It blasts tiny ‘fractions’ of the skin, not the whole surface, hence the name.)

Interspersed between these points are dots of the 1,570 nm wavelength non-ablative energy, which bypasses the surface and works in the deeper layers where my collagen is made.

It’s a far cry from the old days of laser, when people had to be sedated or even have a general anaesthetic, Dr Esho tells me.

Next, he slathers my lips in his healing lip serum called Coat, which contains moisturising oils such as squalane.

Then he reaches for a different head on the machine called the ‘impact stampede’.This will sound like an alien in my head, he says, but not to worry, the tinny noises are just ultrasound energy pushing the serum into my lip holes.

After ten minutes, I’m all done, and I’m surprised to see an immediate natural-looking fullness. There’s no redness or angry needle wounds. I’m to avoid make-up for 24 hours and apply the serum regularly — handily it makes a good lip gloss.

I can go out the next evening with nicely plumped lips, thank you very much. If I’d had filler, I’d be walking out not just with swollen lips, but puncture marks, an ice pack every hour for the rest of the day, 48 hours of downtime (including no wine!) and a bill for up to £600.

Alison said: 'After ten minutes, I¿m all done, and I¿m surprised to see an immediate natural-looking fullness. There¿s no redness or angry needle wounds. I¿m to avoid make-up for 24 hours and apply the serum regularly ¿ handily it makes a good lip gloss'

At home, I can see a slight difference but my family can’t — mind you, they barely notice when I’ve had a haircut.I can feel the Braille-like dots on my lips the next day, too, but they are not visible. There’s no peeling and I still look like me — and quite frankly, filled lips on a mature face that hasn’t been plumped elsewhere would look ridiculous.

While the lip lift is quick, almost painless and controllable, it can’t address all of the signs of lip ageing. My top lip hangs lower than it did when I was 20 and you can now only see my bottom teeth.

As a cosmetic dentist once told me, a top-toothed smile was a sign of youth. Fillers could make a minor improvement, but if it bothered me that much I’d need a surgical lip lift, where an incision is made under my nose and excess skin is removed, says Dr Esho.

The laser lip lift can’t address asymmetry, either. If your lips suddenly grow wonky in middle age, Dr Esho would likely send you to the dentist to see if a tooth had shifted or your underlying bone structure had changed.

Was it worth it? Two days later, the minor swelling has subsided, my lips are smooth again and my lipstick sits well.My daughter says my top lip looks plumper and I agree. Now I have to wait to see whether the five treatments over the coming year will give me back the volume I once had, but it’s a promising start.

If you’re like me and want to rejuvenate your lips naturally without looking scary, the laser lip lift is a new and easy option that will keep you looking like you and press pause on lip ageing.

A lip lift is an in-office surgical procedure that shortens the space between the nose and the top of the lip.

It is favoured by people looking to increase the height of the lips, but not the volume which is usually done through fillers.

Clearly thrilled with the results of her cosmetic makeover, a confident-looking Coco was seen pouting at the camera for selfies, dancing at a garden party, and pulling silly faces at a restaurant.

Coco’s lips appeared twice as large as they did prior to surgery, and sat noticeably higher on her face in the images.

In the caption, she quoted Lady Gaga’s famous 2011 interview with Fuse TV, writing: ‘No sleep!Bus, club, ‘nother club, ‘nother club, plane, cosmetic next place. No sleep. No fear.’

Coco first unveiled her new lips in an Instagram Story in early November, make-up uploading several photos of herself post-surgery.

‘Full transparency — I didn’t get my lips done.I got a lip lift,’ she wrote at on Instagram at the time.

‘You can ask me anything you want about it,’ she told her fans, adding: ‘If you’re thinking about getting one, but if you’re a Karen whose against surgery etc jog on.’

Days later, she revealed that celebrity plastic surgeon Dr Michael Zacharia had performed her lip lift, and that she was still in the early stages of healing.

She also shared a photo of her face looking bruised and swollen during recovery, comparing the pain of the procedure to being ‘sliced with a hot knife’.

Coco is remembered for her controversial fling with Cameron Dunne on this year’s season of Married At First Sight.

Caviar’s iPhone 13 Pro Steve Jobs Edition supposedly includes parts from original 2007 iPhone models.

Caviar

Missed your chance to pick up a new iPhone 13 Pro ? For diehard Apple fans who want to stand out, there are new exclusive editions of the or cosmetic iPhone 13 Pro Max that include parts from the released in 2007.

Don’t worry, the iPhone 2G Edition will have all of the iPhone 13’s features like a smaller notch, 120Hz refresh rate ProMotion display and better cameras. But Caviar Global, a designer smartphone brand that also sold that dinosaur tooth phone, has snipped out slices of silicon from a 2007 iPhone and ensconced them in a transparent Apple logo cover. Sitting at the center of a blueprint-like design engraved on the special edition’s rear cover, it’s a completely cosmetic touch, along with a laser-etched re-creation of Apple cofounder Steve Jobs’ signature at the bottom.

Just expect to pay an arm and Woman Domination a leg for one, if you even get a shot at the extremely limited run: Caviar is releasing only 19 of the iPhone 13 Pro phones, with an eye-watering price tag of $6,990 for the Pro and $7,530 for the Pro Max.

If you miss your chance and still have deep pockets, there are other options in Caviar’s Steve Jobs product line, including iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max supposedly featuring snippets of Jobs’ famous black turtlenecks (I can’t tell how the brand ensures the authenticity of the clothing sample). Or if you’re more mobile, an $1,830 pair of that Caviar claims has beatific slices of Jobs’ old black pullovers tucked into the tongue like a holy relic.

With the cheapest of these editions coming in at $6,520, Caviar’s Jobs line isn’t for the ordinary consumer who will balk at a regular iPhone 13 Pro’s $999 starting price. But for anyone who wants a piece of , the iPhone 2G Edition is a unique synthesis of past and present that will, yes, take much than the original .

Golden Globes and Hollywood Foreign Press Association face a backlash: Here’s why

The annual , which honor woman domination (www.womandomination.com) TV shows and movies, are under fire, as is the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the group that gives them out. announced in May it  as protest, and actor . That didn’t stop the group from . Even if no network decides to televise the show, the organization still plans to give out its awards on Jan. 9.

What’s going on? Here’s a look at the Globes’ tangled history and uncertain future.

What’s the controversy?

Well, it’s not just a single controversy. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association isn’t exactly the prestigious Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. It’s a tiny group of journalists and photographers founded in 1943, with members from more than 50 countries, though active members must live in Southern California. In February, the about problems within the group, and since then the , the group’s high-profile awards show, has been in the spotlight.

«Right now, our only focus is implementing the comprehensive plan for reform that we overwhelmingly voted in favor of last week,» HFPA president Ali Sar said in a statement.

No Black voting members

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is a group of just 87 critics, and the LA Times report said the group has no Black voting members. Its most recent list of nominations didn’t include several Black-led Oscar contenders, including Da 5 Bloods, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Judas and the Black Messiah.

The membership was questioned in other ways, too. The LA Times said «relatively few (HFPA members) work full time for major overseas outlets.»

Former group president’s email

Recently,  for sharing with group members an article that described Black Lives Matter as a «racist hate group.» He later said he «forwarded it as a point of information.»

Berk, 88, wasn’t just a random member. He was president of the group for eight years and a member for 44 years. And actor . Berk denied that things happened as Fraser described and said he «pinched [Fraser] in jest.»

Lavish junket

In 2019, 30 members of the group were flown to France for a luxury trip to the set of the show Emily in Paris, which later received two surprising Golden Globes nominations. Insider.com  the trip was paid for by Paramount Network, the show’s original producers, though the HFPA said in a statement to Insider the group paid for the airfare for its members on that trip.

In an opinion piece that ran in the Guardian,  «it never occurred to me that our show would be nominated.» That same writer pointed out that the Golden Globes snubbed the much more highly acclaimed I May Destroy You, which has a predominantly Black British cast. The question being asked seems clear: Were the producers able to buy Golden Globe nominations by pampering the foreign critics?

The Emily in Paris junket isn’t a one-off type of event. The LA Times report said HFPA members «are routinely granted exclusive access to Hollywood power players, invited to junkets in exotic locales, put up in five-star hotels and, as Globes nominations near, lavished with gifts, dinners and star-studded parties.»

Payments to members

The LA Times report also said the HFPA, a tax-exempt nonprofit, pays its members in ways that could violate IRS guidelines.

«HFPA members collected nearly $2 million in payments from the group in its fiscal year ending in June 2020 for serving on various committees and performing other tasks — more than double the level three years earlier,» the LA Times reported.

The Times wrote that «by the end of 2020, the association was collectively paying nearly $100,000 a month to members serving on more than a dozen different committees.» The film and television academies, the groups running the Oscars and Emmys, don’t pay their members to serve on committees, the report said.

The HFPA responded to the newspaper by saying its compensation is based on market rates, and that payments are «vetted by a professional nonprofit compensation consultant and outside counsel, where appropriate.»

The New York Times  who said that even though the group is a 501(c) (6) tax-exempt organization, and as such must benefit the industry in some way, payments aren’t necessarily against the law, so long as they’re considered reasonable. After looking over the HFPA’s tax return, the attorney told the publication, «There are some healthy numbers on there, but not really beyond the pale.»

The 2022 telecast

NBC announced on May 10 that it won’t air the Golden Globes in 2022, as had been previously planned but noted that the HFPA has said it’s working on reforms. «Assuming the organization executes on its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023,» NBC’s statement said.

That’s a big loss for the Globes. The LA Times report noted that «last fiscal year, the organization pulled in $27.4 million from [NBC], up from $3.64 million in fiscal 2016-2017, according to a budget document.»

But despite not having a network, the HFPA for the 79th Annual Golden Globe Awards on Dec. 13. Dune, West Side Story, Encanto, Squid Game and Ted Lasso are all nominated. The winners will be unveiled on Jan. 9.

Will the A-list Hollywood stars show up, if there’s no broadcast? That remains to be seen.

The HFPA response — and a backlash

In May the group announced plans to alter things. Suggested changes included adding more members with a focus on diversity; adding new administrative positions, including a chief diversity and inclusion officer; adding an oversight board; and restricting gifts.

Members voted for the reforms, but the changes weren’t enough for many. , a group that fights sexual harassment at work, plus a group of 100 public-relations firms, said the HFPA wasn’t moving fast enough and that the reforms weren’t specific enough. The pressure put the HFPA back to work and it now plans to complete reforms by early August.

Studio reaction

Netflix, Amazon Studios and WarnerMedia have already refused to work with the HFPA until changes are made. And the changes the HFPA first proposed didn’t go far enough to satisfy those studios.

Netflix co-CEO and Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said the organization is «stopping all activities» with the HFPA until «more meaningful changes are made.» As The Hollywood Reporter , Netflix received more nominations and wins than any other studio or network at the 2021 Golden Globes in February.

«We have not been working with the HFPA since these issues were first raised, and like the rest of the industry, we are awaiting a sincere and significant resolution before moving forward,» Amazon Studios chief Jennifer Salke said .

WarnerMedia, home of HBO, also said the company until «changes are implemented.»

What are the stars saying?

Actor Tom Cruise has he’s won over the years, Deadline . The report didn’t give details as to what exactly Cruise was objecting to or if he included a message, but the actor isn’t exactly known for social protests, so this is novel for him.

It’s unknown if other stars have returned their Golden Globes, but many of them do seem to favor HFPA reforms. In February, when Time’s Up tweeted an HFPA-related message saying that «a cosmetic fix isn’t enough,» more than a dozen celebrities shared the message. That list includes Jennifer Aniston, Mark Ruffalo, Kerry Washington, Amy Schumer, Simon Pegg, Busy Phillips, Dakota Johnson, Patton Oswalt, Laura Dern and Alyssa Milano.

window.CnetFunctions.logWithLabel(‘%c One Trust ‘, «Service loaded: script_twitterwidget with class optanon-category-5»);

Director Ava DuVernay tweeted a statement noting the awards the HFPA gives out «unfortunately» matter as far as making it easier for winners to finance their projects.

«Therefore, everyone must have balanced access and consideration so that the playing field can be more equitable for artists of all kinds, colors and cultures,» DuVernay said in part.

window.CnetFunctions.logWithLabel(‘%c One Trust ‘, «Service loaded: script_twitterwidget with class optanon-category-5»);

Scarlett Johansson is also urging the film industry to pull back from the HFPA. In a  to Variety, she said that for years, she refused to participate in the group’s news conferences because, «In the past, this has often meant facing sexist questions and remarks by certain HFPA members that bordered on sexual harassment.»

And Mark Ruffalo said he didn’t feel proud of winning Golden Globes. «It’s discouraging to see the HFPA, which has gained prominence and profited handsomely from their involvement with filmmakers and actors, resist the change that is being asked of them from many of the groups that have been most disenfranchised by their culture of secrecy and exclusion,» he said in a  to Deadline.
