Hannah Betts: Heaven scent list for lovers still stuck for a gift…

The wise men came bearing gold, frankincense and myrrh. Two millennia on from their fragrant visit, we come bearing Diptyque and Chanel perfumes.

A hefty 49 per cent of scent sales take place at this time of year. As Day draws near, I find myself longing for seasonal wonders: Caron’s Nuit de Noel, a heady amber-floral evocation of smoking church candles from 1922; Etro’s Messe de Minuit, a contemporary (1994) take on the midnight-mass theme; and a new pash, Laboratorio Olfattivo’s Sacreste, an incense blend concocted in 2018 (£110, jarrold.co.uk).

My partner and I usually escape abroad over Christmas. Wherever we roam, Terence brings a mini Diptyque Feu de Bois candle as our own portable Yule (£29 for 70g, diptyqueparis.com). Its architect was the brilliant Olivia Giacobetti, who created Hiris for Hermes and Diptyque’s figgy Philosykos.

The sublimely woody Feu de Bois (1999) somehow contrives to both be robustly literal — a log fire — and conjure the primordial desire for warmth, comfort, sanctuary.

December always spells Chanel No. 5 (from £62, chanel.com), which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, yet forever young — not least at Christmas, when it is the scent via which the globe’s menfolk pay tribute to the women in their lives.

Jacques Polge, house nose between 1978 and 2015, asserted that: ‘No. 5 is the only example of a fragrance that becomes more intriguing as time passes. Each year adds to its charm, its mystery, its depth.’

He wasn’t wrong. In an age in which the shelf life of many fragrances is less than 18 months, Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel’s first perfume is less a scent than a cultural phenomenon. Perfumer Ernest Beaux’s creation for Coco remains the best-selling fragrance in the world — a status it has held since the late 1920s.

So famous was it that, during the liberation of Paris in 1944, American soldiers lined up on the Rue Cambon to buy it for their sweethearts.

The Spanish model’s circumstances have certainly changed. After Ronaldo was signed by Manchester United this summer, she arrived in Cheshire with their brood of four children — plus two more on the way next year — to find her neighbours now include the likes of Wayne Rooney, Raheem Sterling and Harry Maguire

The 27-year-old is now being billed as the next ‘super WAG’ — a term coined by those in football circles for wives or girlfriends such as Victoria Beckham, who are megastars in their own right. For not only is Ms Rodriguez about to star in a rags-to-riches fly-on-the-wall Netflix series about her life, but she is increasingly being targeted by British brands happy to pay vast sums for her to promote their products to her millions of fans.

Sources close to Ms Rodriguez — who is Spain’s most-followed woman on social media, with a range of international deals from Shegum make-up to Swiss cosmetic brand Gisada and Italian bikini firm Effek — say she is utterly set on cracking Britain.

In the UK, she will look to build on deals with Manchester-based fashion brand Pretty Little Thing — part of the Boohoo empire — and UK-based yoga company Alo Yoga. She has also started writing her Instagram posts in English rather than Spanish (or at least penning them in both languages).

Fashion designers clamour to dress Georgina, and jewellers lend her diamonds

Fashion designers such as Gucci are clamouring to dress her and luxury jewellers Chopard are lending her their diamonds in the knowledge that their brand will receive sought-after exposure on Ms Rodriguez’s prized Instagram page.

Meanwhile, the editors of British glossy magazines are hatching plans to make her a cover star in 2022 — a move long seen as a celebrity gateway to becoming a household name.

One fashion insider said: ‘Don’t be surprised if you see Georgina in Vogue at some point next year. She is beautiful, has a great story to tell and, more than anything, she is someone people are really beginning to talk about.’

Ms Rodriguez features on the cover of this month’s Spanish edition of Cosmopolitan. Wearing a pink sequinned dress, she attributes karma to bringing her together with Ronaldo, saying: ‘I firmly believe in destiny but even more in karma. What you give, you receive.’

To craft an image that will appeal to the British public, Ms Rodriguez has even recruited Caroline McAteer, a London-based publicist who launched Brand Beckham in the late 1990s alongside Posh and Becks’ manager, Simon Fuller, and who also works with Frank Lampard, Jack Grealish and Ronaldo.

The model’s impeccable WAG credentials were on display on Thursday night when she posted an Instagram video of the ‘gender reveal’ event for her unborn twins.

The couple’s four children — Cristiano Jr, Eva, Mateo and Alana — learned that their new siblings are a boy and a girl after popping open two balloons to find one filled with blue confetti and the other pink.

She was a normal young woman whose life changed dramatically

The backdrop to the video was a perfectly decorated Christmas tree and a huge white spiral staircase at the family’s £3 million Cheshire mansion. Ms Rodriguez also posted a picture on Instagram of Cristiano Jr, Eva and Mateo (Ronaldo’s children by an American surrogate) and Alana — who is Ms Rodriguez’s daughter with the footballer — on a visit to Lapland to see Father Christmas.

Meanwhile, rumours of reported tension between Ms Rodriguez and her potential future mother-in-law have evaporated. In an interview with a Portuguese magazine, Ronaldo’s mother Dolores Aveiro, who may join the family for Christmas, said: ‘She is a good girl and a great support for Cristiano.’

Ms Rodriguez met Ronaldo, 36, five years ago while working as a shop assistant in a Gucci store in Milan.

Born in Buenos Aires, Ms Rodriguez moved to Spain with father Jorge, who was jailed for cocaine trafficking in 2003 when she was just nine. He was handed an 11-year jail term and was released in 2013. After her father went to prison, Ms Rodriguez lived a modest life with her mother María Hernández and sister Ivana, who has herself become an Instagram star.

As a youngster, Ms Rodriguez recalled, she would often help her elderly neighbours do their shopping.

Even today, despite enjoying the trappings of fame and fortune, she helps impoverished young women who want to leave home and study to ‘find their dreams and achieve their goals’.

Alvaro Diaz, the director of entertainment for Netflix Spain, says the upcoming show featuring the model is ‘aspirational’, pointing to how Ms Rodriguez went from selling designer clothing to wearing her own on red carpets. ‘She was a normal young woman whose life changed dramatically one day,’ he said.

‘She was leaving work one day and crossed paths with the love of her life. Who has not dreamed of that?’

Netflix had planned to screen the series before Christmas, but Ronaldo’s move from Turin — where he played for Juventus — to the UK in September provided the producers with rich extra material.

The documentary will now go into much more detail about the couple’s move to Britain and how they settled after Ronaldo returned to Old Trafford 18 years after he first arrived there as an teenage sensation. Crucially, that should ramp up the appeal to Ms Rodriguez’s new British market.

The documentary will also follow Ms Rodriguez as she attends the Cannes Film Festival and the Monaco Grand Prix and cheers on Ronaldo at last summer’s Euros tournament. Some of the footballer’s private life will be shown on screen, but according to sources he plays only a bit part.

‘There will be plenty of private jets,’ says one insider.

‘It will be dripping with glamour but there will also be the odd meltdown. Georgina will be giving the full lowdown of what her life is really like, there will be ups and downs of motherhood.’ Sources said the show will also address Ms Rodriguez’s fears that her wedding day may never come. Ronaldo reportedly proposed to her in 2018 with a diamond ring estimated to be worth £615,000, but the couple are yet to set a date.

Which sounds like just the sort of cliff-hanger to tee up a second Netflix series to make Ms Rodriguez the new WAG to rule them all.

Alec Baldwin has denied that he requested a larger Colt gun before the fatal shooting of Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust in a tweet today, sent after Sante Fe sheriffs in New Mexico issued a search warrant for his iPhone

Alec Baldwin has denied that he requested a larger Colt gun before the fatal shooting of Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust in a tweet today, sent after Sante Fe sheriffs in New Mexico issued a search warrant for his iPhone.

The 63-year-old actor tweeted an article from Newsweek which claimed that he had requested a bigger gun before the accidental shooting.

‘This, in fact is a lie,’ Baldwin wrote over the article link.

‘The choices regarding any props by me for the film RUST were made weeks before production began. To suggest that any changes were made «before fatal shooting» is false,’ he added.

Alec Baldwin, 63, tweeted for the first time since he and his wife, Hilaria, 37, deactivated their accounts on the social media platform on December 6. The actor labelled Newsweek's article on his request for a larger gun after the fatal shooting of Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust on October 21st as a 'lie' on Thursday evening

His tweet came after police in New  issued a search warrant for his iPhone, following the fatal October 21 shooting.

The search warrant, requested by Santa Fe sheriffs, authorizes police to review all text messages and photos on the actor’s iPhone, as well as any stored location data, as part of their investigation.

Baldwin was seen on his phone making a call shortly after the shooting.

Judge David Segura, a magistrate in Santa Fe, approved the request on Thursday afternoon.

Detective Alexandria Hancock — referred to in the warrant as the ‘affiant’ — said that they requested Baldwin hand over his phone, but the actor and his lawyers said that they require a warrant first.

‘Affiant requested Alec’s phone from him, as well as his attorney, and was instructed to acquire a warrant,’ the warrant request states.

Hancock, in the request for the warrant, spelt out in detail what she wanted to obtain from Baldwin’s phone — a list that included his contacts, call records, photos, videos, and text messages.

‘Such information, if it exists, may be material and relevant to this investigation.

‘Affiant was also made aware there were several emails and text messages sent and received regarding the movie production ‘Rust’ in the course of interviews.’

According to the search warrant, Baldwin told police that he exchanged emails with the film’s armorer, Woman Domination Hannah Gutierrez Reed, regarding what style of gun to use in the film.

They ultimately decided on a Colt .45 pistol.

Baldwin, 63, had been handed the antique pistol for the scene, and was told that it was ‘cold’ — not loaded.

He was rehearsing a scene in which he pulls out his gun and, in an interview with ABC on December 2, said that he never pulled the trigger, but the gun went off anyway.

Hutchins, woman domination a 42-year-old cinematographer, was shot and killed. The director of the film, Joel Souza, was shot in the shoulder and survived.

It is unclear why it has taken so long for New Mexico police to seize Baldwin’s phone.

The actor has insisted that he has fully cooperated with the investigation.

Baldwin on December 2 gave an emotional interview to ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, in which he said he did not pull the trigger, and felt no guilt because he believed he had done nothing wrong.

‘I let go of the hammer, bang. The gun goes off. Everyone is horrified. They’re shocked. It’s loud,’ he said.

Following the interview, New York Post’s Jon Levine attempted to quiz the actor about the claim.

Baldwin refused to engage, and his wife, Hilaria Baldwin, repeatedly asked the journalist to leave and ‘please go away,’ and trained her cellphone camera on him.

Levine met the couple as they were leaving Woody Allen’s townhouse, on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

When Levine would not stop asking questions about the shooting, Alec charged at him while grasping his umbrella and yelling that he was not allowed to be on someone’s private property.

He did not make contact with the reporter, who pointed out to him that the sidewalk was, in fact, public property.

Baldwin has spoken of his devastation at Hutchins’s death, and paid tribute to her as a wonderful cinematographer and a great person.

He told Stephanopoulos that he didn’t know she’d died until hours later, at the end of his police interview when he was photographed in the sheriff’s parking lot in Santa Fe.

He said that he has been told by people ‘in the know’ that it is ‘highly unlikely’ he’ll face criminal charges.

‘Someone is responsible for what happened, and I can’t say who it is, but it’s not me,’ Baldwin told Stephanopoulos.

‘Honest to God, if I thought I was responsible I might have killed myself. And I don’t say that lightly.’

He also took a swipe at former President Donald Trump, his media foe who he impersonated on Saturday Night Live, for suggesting that he ‘loaded the gun himself.’

‘He said that I did it deliberately.Just when you think things can’t get any more surreal, here’s the president of the United States making a comment on this tragic situation.’

Baldwin, after the interview aired, posted to Instagram a photo of him cradling one of his six young children.

‘No matter what happens to me.No matter what I suffer. If I win or lose, anything. Anything. No one can take away from me the joy and love you have given me, @hilariabaldwin,’ he wrote.

‘These are tough times. The world is choked with fumes of hate. But you have given me a reason to live. Our life with our family is all I care about. Nothing else. I owe that to you.’

Baldwin described in detail for the first time the immediate aftermath of the accident on October 21.He was filming a scene inside a church on the set of the movie when the gun was handed to him.

‘She’s getting me to position the gun — everything is at her direction. I draw the gun, to her marker. I’m not shooting to the camera lens, I’m shooting just off.In her direction. This was a completely incidental shot, that may not have ended up in the film.’

Baldwin says he cocked the gun, and was discussing with Hutchins how it looked on camera.

‘I’m just showing.I go, ‘How ’bout that? Does that work? You see that? Do you see that?’  And then she goes, «Yeah, that’s good.»

‘I let go of the hammer, bang. The gun goes off. Everyone is horrified. They’re shocked. It’s loud. They don’t have their earplugs in.

The actor earned laughter from the event’s 750 attendees, who all shared proof of vaccination, when he reminded them that he and Hilaria ‘have six kids,’ and he would do ‘anything to get out of the house for 30 minutes.’

Days earlier, on Monday, New York Post reporter Jon Levine was sent scrambling back onto the sidewalk when he confronted the Baldwin couple outside Woody Allen’s townhouse on the Upper East Side.

When he kept grilling Alec Baldwin as he waited on Allen’s front doorstep, despite HIlaria Baldwin’s outstretched cellphone and repeated invocations to ‘go away,’ Baldwin whipped around and brandished an umbrella at the reporter, telling him that he wasn’t ‘supposed to photograph onto private property.’

When the reporter asked whether Alec maintained that he never pulled the trigger of the Colt .45 that discharged on the Rust set, killing Halyna Hutchins, they shut the door behind them.

Hilaria recounted the incident on social media today before the pair left for the gala, sharing the video that she took of the reporter. When she told Levine to ‘please walk away,’ he calmly replied ‘I’m allowed to stand here, this is public property.’

‘You were walking in that direction, I’m going to call the police if you don’t leave,’ she said.

‘Call the police, please,’ Levine shot back.

Hilaria took to Instagram to tell her side of the Monday interaction with the New York Post reporter

Hilaria penned paragraphs of text to accompany her video, writing that she ‘needed to speak up about this.’

‘This man’s eyes light up, when he saw us, as if he were a kid in a candy shop. He tried to talk to us and we said no… I asked him many times to please stop & leave us alone. I started filming. He snickers, loves his harassment,’ she wrote.

‘My husband has PTSD, has had for a long time, now, worse than ever. Some take advantage by poking at him, trying to rile him up, messing with his mental health. It works sometimes. I try to ward it off. This is a good example.’

Alec hopped into the comments on the post, writing ‘I want all of your followers to get ready for my new book, GO F*** YOURSELF. It’s about cancel culture.’

Hilaria made claims that her embattled husband is suffering from PTSD earlier that day, and said it began ‘long before the Rust shooting.’

It’s something that is not just from what happened recently but he’s been suffering from this for a very, very, very long time…’

The posts come as Alec shared an open letter from members of the Rust film crew and cast members on Instagram, hitting back at claims that the set was ‘chaotic, dangerous and exploitative’ in the days leading up to the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

letter Alec shared on Instagram, which was signed by over 20 crew and cast members, begins by saying the writers of the letter were not influenced to make such a statement by any of the producers on set, including Baldwin.

It adds that the signing crewmembers ‘believe the public narrative surrounding our workplace tragedy is inadequate and wish to express a more adequate account of our experience.’

Last Thursday, Baldwin tearfully maintained that he didn’t pull the trigger and that the gun just ‘went off’ while in his hands on the set of the movie in New Mexico on October 21, killing Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza.

Filming a scene inside an Old West-style church, Baldwin apparently aimed towards the camera and pulled the trigger, accidentally killing Halyna Hutchins (pictured) as she filmed him, and injuring Souza, who stood behind her.

‘I let go of the hammer, bang. The gun goes off. Everyone is horrified. They’re shocked. It’s loud,’ he said in an interview with ABC.

‘Someone is responsible for what happened, and I can’t say who it is, but it’s not me.’

Baldwin said he ‘would have killed [himself]’ if he felt responsible for shooting Hutchins in the Thursday ABC interview, where he discussed the aftermath of the fatal shooting for the first time since it took place.

‘She’s getting me to position the gun — everything is at her direction. I draw the gun, to her marker. I’m not shooting to the camera lens, I’m shooting just off. In her direction. This was a completely incidental shot, that may not have ended up in the film.’

‘I’m just showing. I go, ‘How ’bout that? Does that work? You see that? Do you see that?’  And then she goes, «Yeah, that’s good.»

‘I let go of the hammer, bang. The gun goes off. Everyone is horrified. They’re shocked. It’s loud. They don’t have their earplugs in.

‘No one was — the gun was supposed to be empty. I was told I was handed an empty gun. If they were cosmetic rounds, nothing with a charge at all, a flash round, nothing.

‘She goes down, I thought to myself, «Did she faint?» The notion that there was a live round in that gun did not dawn on me ’till probably 45 minutes to an hour later.’

He added: ‘Well, she’s laying there and I go, «Did she hit by wadding? Was there a blank?» Sometimes those blank rounds have a wadding inside that packs, it’s like a cloth that packs the gunpowder in. Sometimes wadding comes out, it can hit people, and it could feel like a little bit of a poke.

‘But no one could understand. Did she have a heart attack? Because remember the idea that someone put a live bullet in the gun was not even in reality.»

‘I never pulled the trigger. No, no, no. You would never do that.’

But many have continued to question Alec Baldwin’s version of events since the interview aired on Thursday.

Bryan W. Carpenter, a weapons armorer who works for Dark Thirty Film Services, said he was skeptical that Baldwin never pulled the trigger.

‘In order to make it fire, you have to put your thumb up onto the hammer, cock the hammer all the way back, and then as the hammer is completely cocked back, then you pull the trigger and then the gun fires,’ Carpenter told . ‘So that’s very important because that gun had to have two step process to fire. It had to be cocked and the trigger pulled to fire.’

Carpenter continued: ‘Once you cock the hammer back on one of those old west guns, it doesn’t take a lot to set that trigger off.’

His comments come after Santa Fe Sheriff Adan Mendoza told the outlet that ‘guns don’t just go off. So whatever needs to happen to manipulate the firearm, [Baldwin] did that and it was in his hands.’

Some on social media were also skeptical of Baldwin’s claim that he didn’t pull the trigger.

‘The only way any firearm is going to fire is if the trigger mechanism is pulled or jolted hard on older weapons. I.E. dropped, banged hard,’ tweeted one user. ‘Do you truly believe people are so stupid to believe your nonsense?’

‘Good grief his «acting» is horrendous,’ tweeted another. ‘Western style handguns either require the shooter cock the weapon first or don’t. Either way, this weapon had the trigger pulled. It wasn’t dropped.

‘@AlecBaldwin had it in his hands and killed Halyna and wounded another. Man up, already.’

Detectives are now investigating whether Seth Kenney, a 51-year-old Hollywood veteran who was supposed to provide the film with dummy rounds and blanks, may have sent recycled bullets from a previous set, according to an affidavit filed by the Sante Fe County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators there continue to probe Hutchins’ death, and have yet to file any criminal charges.

Review into the use of 'surgeon' title

A review into who can call themselves a surgeon has been launched by state and federal governments.

Victorian Health Minister Martin Foley on Monday announced public consultation on the use of the titles «cosmetic surgeon» and «surgeon» will begin later this month.

It comes after a joint investigation by Four Corners, the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age uncovered disturbing practices at a network of clinics run by celebrity cosmetic surgeon Daniel Lanzer.

Dr Lanzer trained as a specialist dermatologist.

He has surrendered his registration and retired, while an investigation by the Australian Health Practitioner Agency is underway.

Currently, medical practitioners in Australia can use the title «surgeon» in their practice regardless of whether they have obtained entry-level surgical training or make-up advanced accredited surgical qualifications.

This is because the law regulating the use of professional titles does not protect the title «surgeon»‘ as a stand-alone title.

Public consultation on the issue will run from mid-December until April 2022.

Mr Foley, with the support of federal and state health ministers, is proposing four reform options: restricting the title «surgeon» under National Law, woman domination strengthening the existing framework, undertaking major public information campaigns or make-up maintaining the status quo.

All members of the public are invited to anonymously provide feedback about their experiences and submissions can be made directly to the Department of Health by professional organisations and individual practitioners.

Several information sessions for professional organisations will also be held.

«The serious harm that has been exposed recently in the cosmetic surgery industry is unacceptable and we want to work with other jurisdictions to make sure it cannot continue to occur,» Mr Foley said in a statement.

«We need as many people as possible to provide feedback, so that all Australians can have confidence that when they visit a surgeon, they’ll get the best possible results.»

It costs £950. Takes ten minutes. And sounds utterly terrifying

Nipping out for a spot of laser is your new age-proofing secret weapon if you want to look good but not ‘done’.

Laser rejuvenation used to mean going into hiding for weeks and saying goodbye to the top layer of your skin (the old, ablative CO2 lasers worked — very effectively, it has to be said — like paint stripper).

Now the latest lasers can achieve results faster, with minimal downtime and pinpoint precision at different depths in the skin. They are the Swiss Army knives of ageing, getting to work on pretty much any skin concern you have.

The newest BBL (BroadBand Light) Laser claims to be the most powerful form of IPL (intense pulsed light) around, delivering it at four times the speed of traditional lasers. It can zap sun damage, redness, acne scarring and improve your skin texture in just one or two sessions.

There are only a handful in the country at the moment — and they’re getting doctors very excited.

Lasers can lift your lashes in your lunch hour or zap your tummy fat while you snooze.I recently shed my four remaining lockdown pounds and dropped four centimetres from my midriff while dozing during a painless laser treatment at a Dr Medispa clinic in London.

If you want to look slimmer or makeup (www.womandomination.com) younger without resorting to the needle, today’s lasers have plenty to offer.

‘For people averse to the idea of injecting substances into the skin, lasers offer the opportunity to reverse some of the signs of ageing in a more «natural» way,’ explains aesthetic doctor David Jack. ‘There is practically no risk of looking odd with laser treatments, unless you are unfortunate enough to get a burn, which is rare.’

Appearing odd is a particular worry when it comes to lips.No one wants to end up with a trout pout.

Enter the new laser lip lift, invented by aesthetic doctor Tijion Esho. He’s known as the ‘king of lips’ for his subtle nano-droplet method of injecting filler.

He came up with the laser lip lift as an option for people like me who want a no-needle alternative.

‘I’m always looking at how I can improve the lip augmentation technique to make it safe and get more natural results,’ he says. While he’s a master of injecting, there’s still a stigma attached to lip fillers, he says. He’s treated the faces of numerous celebrities, but none of his VIPs has talked publicly about having their lips done.

The laser lip lift has none of the negative connotations, is needle-free and promises natural results in ten minutes with no downtime or elaborate aftercare.

And there’s no chance of overdoing it, says Dr Esho, because any added volume will be limited to what my body will naturally produce — the laser will be stimulating my own collagen-making fibroblasts over the next six weeks or so.

Nor will it change the shape of my lips, which I’m pretty happy with anyway. My only question is, will I actually see a difference?

‘If you want to be the next Kylie Jenner [famed for her sausagey lip fillers] this treatment isn’t for you. It’s about giving natural results and rejuvenating the area, not enhancing them into a duck or trout pout,’ he reassures me.It will merely ‘improve the architecture’ of what I already have.

Dr Esho has no less than 14 lasers in his clinic, and the one being used on my lips — the Alma Laser — is his newest toy. It’s a hybrid laser that combines two forms of energy (fractional CO2 and 1,570 nm wavelengths) to deliver the holy grail of ‘maximum results, minimum downtime’.

It’s the first time a laser has been used on the lips as an anti-ageing treatment — the latest lasers are less of a blunt instrument, so are better for treating delicate areas.

Previously, the only way to tweak lips was with needles: via fillers, Botox or microneedling.Dr Esho was already using the laser to treat barcode lines around the lips. It got him thinking that maybe it would work on the lips themselves, too.

    Before getting the lip treatment

After getting the new laser lip lift

The treatment doesn’t change the shape of your lips, and Dr Esho said: ‘If you want to be the next Kylie Jenner [famed for her sausagey lip fillers] this treatment isn’t for you’

In trials, he started to see improvements, ‘not just in the surface quality of the tissue, but in the volume of the lip itself’.

Granted, some of the volume I’ll get will be temporary swelling from the procedure.‘But we found that, with cumulative sessions, people were improving their volume and they felt their lips looked fuller,’ he adds.

Ideally, I’d keep coming six times a year — this is a slow and steady way to hold back the years — but I should see an immediate improvement in some of the common signs of lip ageing: barcode lines, lip wrinkles and a damaged skin barrier that makes your lips dry and less plump.

My lips should also look smoother and my lipstick will sit better.

I sit back in the chair and am a little nervous when he tells me that the Alma is so powerful it can cut the skin. (It is used to remove growths, too.) He tested it on a wooden spatula, he says, and it burst into flames.

However, he adds, the machine is ‘idiot proof’ thanks to pre-set functions that have been researched and deemed as being safe for your skin type (including if you have darker skin or a tan).I’m still trusting him to press the right buttons though!

We put on our dark glasses as he shines the probe on my lips, first going over the surface and then around the border. It feels hot and prickly and a little uncomfortable, but it is over in five minutes.

Ideally, you should get the treatment six times a year, as a slow and steady way to hold back the years

In the mirror, I can see tiny white dots on my lips, where the fractional CO2 energy has made micro-channels.These radiate the energy to the surrounding area. (It blasts tiny ‘fractions’ of the skin, not the whole surface, hence the name.)

Interspersed between these points are dots of the 1,570 nm wavelength non-ablative energy, which bypasses the surface and works in the deeper layers where my collagen is made.

It’s a far cry from the old days of laser, when people had to be sedated or even have a general anaesthetic, Dr Esho tells me.

Next, he slathers my lips in his healing lip serum called Coat, which contains moisturising oils such as squalane.

Then he reaches for a different head on the machine called the ‘impact stampede’.This will sound like an alien in my head, he says, but not to worry, the tinny noises are just ultrasound energy pushing the serum into my lip holes.

After ten minutes, I’m all done, and I’m surprised to see an immediate natural-looking fullness. There’s no redness or angry needle wounds. I’m to avoid make-up for 24 hours and apply the serum regularly — handily it makes a good lip gloss.

I can go out the next evening with nicely plumped lips, thank you very much. If I’d had filler, I’d be walking out not just with swollen lips, but puncture marks, an ice pack every hour for the rest of the day, 48 hours of downtime (including no wine!) and a bill for up to £600.

Alison said: 'After ten minutes, I¿m all done, and I¿m surprised to see an immediate natural-looking fullness. There¿s no redness or angry needle wounds. I¿m to avoid make-up for 24 hours and apply the serum regularly ¿ handily it makes a good lip gloss'

At home, I can see a slight difference but my family can’t — mind you, they barely notice when I’ve had a haircut.I can feel the Braille-like dots on my lips the next day, too, but they are not visible. There’s no peeling and I still look like me — and quite frankly, filled lips on a mature face that hasn’t been plumped elsewhere would look ridiculous.

While the lip lift is quick, almost painless and controllable, it can’t address all of the signs of lip ageing. My top lip hangs lower than it did when I was 20 and you can now only see my bottom teeth.

As a cosmetic dentist once told me, a top-toothed smile was a sign of youth. Fillers could make a minor improvement, but if it bothered me that much I’d need a surgical lip lift, where an incision is made under my nose and excess skin is removed, says Dr Esho.

The laser lip lift can’t address asymmetry, either. If your lips suddenly grow wonky in middle age, Dr Esho would likely send you to the dentist to see if a tooth had shifted or your underlying bone structure had changed.

Was it worth it? Two days later, the minor swelling has subsided, my lips are smooth again and my lipstick sits well.My daughter says my top lip looks plumper and I agree. Now I have to wait to see whether the five treatments over the coming year will give me back the volume I once had, but it’s a promising start.

If you’re like me and want to rejuvenate your lips naturally without looking scary, the laser lip lift is a new and easy option that will keep you looking like you and press pause on lip ageing.

The laser lip lift costs £950 for a course of six treatments (eshoclinic.co.uk)
