How many of these Christmas light decorating tricks do you use?

id=»article-body» class=»row» section=»article-body»>

No matter where you live, there are plenty of ways to get creative with Christmas lights. Apartment and condo dwellers may lack outdoor outlets, but can still beam festive flare to the neighborhood.

I grew up with parents who went wild with Christmas decor at our house. But now, decades later, I’m living the renter’s life with children of my own. And that means finding creative ways to light up windows, doorways and balconies for the holidays. Here are some of my tips for displaying Christmas lights that are simple, cheap and still look professional. (You can also watch my tutorial in the video embedded above.)

Christmas lights on a tree and around a window

Hook up size C9 LED bulbs along a window edge for pts terbaik sumatera all to see.

Border the windows

Lights around a window are a super simple way to spread cheer — and you’re going to want to buy some big, chunky bulbs to make sure everyone can see that cheer. That means size C7 or C9. And for anyone with an apartment or condo, you’ll need to attach them on the inside border.

Stay away from incandescent bulbs for indoor decorating. I say that as someone who has bought them for years because, well, they’re cheaper. But these bulbs get hot, and that’s not good if the bulbs will touch anything — or if you have kids or pets. The LED C9-size bulbs may cost a little more, but they’re safer and more reliable. For my windows I used the Home Depot brand  marked as «super bright,» and these are indistinguishable from incandescents from a distance.

Incandescent and LED look similar. Here, the LED is pictured above the incandescent strand.

For a large window, a strand of 25 lights should work well (about 16 feet in length). You’ll also need clear, plastic, . A pack of 40 small hooks is more than plenty for one window. Stick one every six inches along the border, keeping the hooks in the same direction. Distance between hooks doesn’t need to be exact. What matters is that you’ll be able to keep the bulb cord taut and in a straight line as it hugs the edge, with bulbs facing outward in the same direction.

Tuck in a strand of cord into the hook along the window border, trying to keep the line straight and taut as you go around.

Bridget Carey / CNET

Wait at least 30 minutes for adhesive to set against the window border wall before attaching the light cord into the hooks. Make sure you plan where the plug end is going to attach to an extension cord before you begin.

The best balcony on the block

Decorating the railing of a balcony can be tricky if there’s no outdoor power outlet. But there are options.

This $4 adapter turns a light socket into a power outlet.

Bridget Carey / CNET

If your balcony or outdoor area has a light fixture that uses a standard bulb, you’re in luck. Take out the bulb and screw in a , which converts a light socket into two power outlets. (And you can still screw a bulb in the bottom.)

Now you have a way to power lights to put around a balcony railing. But don’t just slop on a strand haphazardly — keep the bulbs in an orderly design. An easy method is to take a strand of C7 or C9 bulbs and make each bulb face upward on the railing, keeping the cord in a straight line. Use zip ties around each bulb to secure the strand snugly, with all bulbs all pointing up.

Be sure to test extension cords and lights before pinning them down with zip ties. Remember that light socket adapters use plugs with two prongs, so three-prong grounded extension cords won’t work.

I also recommend covering open sockets with a strip of electrical tape, to prevent water from getting inside exposed slots.

Battery-powered holiday magic

If you don’t have an outdoor light to turn into an outlet, go with battery-powered lights. I’m seeing a ton of choices this year at stores — several of which are marked safe for outdoor use. Some have timers that will automatically turn off lights after six hours. Some lights have options to switch between flashing and chaser effects.

This rope of 100 micro dot LEDs stretches a little over 24 feet and takes six AA batteries.

Bridget Carey / CNET

This year I’m using a long rope of 100 micro dot LED lights to decorate the railing on my front steps. A rope light is simple to twist around the handrails. It cost me — but each strand takes six AA batteries. I’m also using two smaller strands of to decorate some miniature tree bushes I bought for outside the front door. Those smaller outdoor-safe strands just take three batteries each.

I’ve been lighting these up every night for a week and haven’t had to replace the batteries yet, but I’ll update this post when I reach the end of the battery lifespan.

Try a different tree every day

Your 2020 could use a cascading rainbow tree.

Bridget Carey / CNET

Today’s fake, prelit trees are a cinch to set up, and they have fun effects. But I don’t have room to store a fake tree, so I go with a fresh, real tree. This year, I tried out a high-tech strand of lights called , and it brings next-level Christmas magic to a tree without any effort.

For my six-footer, I wrapped a 250-light strand around the tree, as I would any other strand of lights. This Generation II Twinkly strand of RGB LEDs, , is controlled by an app and requires Wi-Fi to work. Fire up the app and point your phone’s camera at the tree for it to read where every light is sitting on the tree. Once it maps the location of every light, choose between various vivid light effects that fade, twinkle or rotate around the tree in cool patterns.

Or maybe you’re in a twisting candy-cane animation mood?

Bridget Carey / CNET

Switch your design on the fly with an app full of preset effects. Depending on my mood, I can have a rainbow fade cascade down from the top, or a candy-cane red and white swirl, or cheerful twinkling tropical carnival colors. Customize the speed, color and brightness, or design your own patterns. When you’re spending a lot of time at home, you can keep things feeling fresh with a different light design every day.

Smart plugs keep it simple

When outlets are in hard-to-reach places, can save you some trouble — and you don’t need any smart speaker or hub to make them work for you.

Put a smart plug in an outlet, and attach your light strand to the smart plug. Now it can be turned on and off with an app, instead of needing you to strain to unplug extension cords at the end of the night. I use ($25), which also can set lights to turn on and off with a timer. There’s also a button on the side of the plug for others to control it without an app.

Avoid using incandescent lights indoors. Melted window blinds don’t make for a jolly holiday.

Inside La Palma's volcano, gas emissions mark colourful terrain

By Joan Faus, Horaci Garcia and Borja Suarez

LA PALMA, Spain, Jan 24 (Reuters) — Two bare pine tree trunks remain standing inside the jagged and colourful main crater of the volcano on the Spanish island of La Palma, while gas emissions and high temperatures continue though they are easing a month after the eruption ended.

A Reuters crew was on Friday granted rare access to the edge of the volcano’s craters with a team from the Canary Islands Volcanology Institute (Involcan), who went inside one of the six craters to measure gas emissions and pts terbaik sumatera temperatures and check that their monitoring stations were functioning well.

Powerful gas emissions during the 85-day volcanic eruption have tainted parts of the crater yellow, orange and white.

The surrounding terrain is pitch black, with violent tongues of lava scattered along slopes completely covered with a thick blanket of volcanic ash.Scores of burnt pine trees are now beige.

«Despite having been inside (the crater) many times, it always strikes me how big it is. Once you are inside you realise it’s huge, gigantic,» said Pedro Hernandez, the Involcan volcanologist leading the team.

«There are many craters and gas emissions continue to be very impressive from a visual perspective.»

The volcanic eruption in La Palma in the Canary Islands, which officially ended on Christmas Day, was the most devastating in Europe in 80 years, he said.

Rivers of lava destroyed around 3,000 buildings and scores of fields covering 1,219 hectares, although no direct deaths were reported.

Temperatures inside the craters were around 840 degrees Celsius, lower than the 1,100 degrees registered around two weeks before. But extremely high temperatures could continue for several years, said Hernandez, 53. This is the eighth volcanic eruption he has studied on the ground.

His team also checked in person that gas emissions from the craters’ edges had slightly decreased but the volcano continued to emit sulphur and carbon dioxide, which could be smelled in the surrounding area.

Fifteen minutes from the crater by foot, where the Involcan expedition left its vehicles, the ground remained warm.

What is most striking for locals is that what used to be a low set of green slopes overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and the towns below has now been transformed forever after the eruption brought a huge volcanic cone to the surface.

The area close to the craters remains closed to the public in a closely policed perimeter, leaving most of the area in almost absolute silence only interrupted by birdsong and the wind.(Reporting by Joan Faus, Borja Suarez and Horaci Garcia; Editing by Jessica Jones and Emelia Sithole-Matarise)

Students must not return home ahead of lockdown in bid to save…

Students should not return home from university before the second lockdown begins as it will risk the lives of loved ones, a minister has said.

Universities minister Michelle Donelan has also called on institutions not to switch fully to online lessons during the lockdown as she warned it could jeopardise students’ learning and «risk their mental health».

In a letter to students ahead of the second lockdown in England, Ms Donelan has urged young people against travelling back to their families before the new national restrictions come into effect on Thursday.

She said: «I know and appreciate that a number of you may want to be back with your family during this difficult time, but I urge you to stay where you are in order to save lives.»

In a separate letter to vice-chancellors, the minister said she wants all students to have «some form of face-to-face learning» where possible, as they had not seen evidence of increased transmission within teaching environments on university campuses.

Ms Donelan said: «We expect you to continue to make informed decisions with your local public health teams on the level of face-to-face teaching and learning to provide, based on appropriate risk assessments and the needs of students and staff.

Signs on a window at Manchester Metropolitan University´s Birley campus where hundreds of students have been told to self-isolate after 127 of them tested positive for coronavirus.

«We do not, however, want or expect to see a transition to full online learning during the new national restrictions — this could jeopardise the learning that students receive, as well as risk their mental health and wellbeing.»

It comes after guidance from the Cabinet Office said universities and adult education settings «should consider moving to increased levels of online learning where possible» during the four-week lockdown.

The University and College Union (UCU) is calling on vice-chancellors to move all non-essential activities online now to keep students and staff safe and to minimise the spread of Covid-19.

But new Department for Education (DfE) guidance on what universities and students in England should do during the second lockdown says face-to-face teaching should continue where it can be done safely.

The guidance says «commuter students» — those who live at their family home and travel to the university campus for lessons — will still be allowed to attend the university for educational purposes during the lockdown.

It also advises that face coverings should be worn in all university learning environments, providing that they do «not impact teaching and learning.»

The new guidelines say libraries and study spaces on campus should remain open during the new national restrictions, but students must not gather in these spaces unless it is part of a scheduled in-person seminar or tutorial.

Students have been told to remain at university and not to travel home before November 5 so that they can «benefit from face-to-face teaching and Covid-secure educational facilities» and prevent the risk of spreading coronavirus.

Ms Donelan told students: «The reason we are asking you to remain at your university area and not to travel home before the new restrictions come into place on Thursday is to prevent any further spread of Covid-19 — any movement around the country will risk the lives of our loved ones.»

Hillary Gyebi-Ababio, vice president for higher education at the National Union of Students (NUS), has called the demands «unjust» and she warned the rules could be «damaging» to students’ mental health.

The NUS is calling for more «credible options» to be put on the table — including letting students leave their halls, releasing them from rental contracts, or allowing them to leave their course altogether.

Ms Gyebi-Ababio said: «With news of a national lockdown, some students will understandably want to reform households with family and be around loved ones.

«With current guidance allowing people to move homes and form new households until Thursday it is unjust that the Government calls on students to stay put.

«For students that do remain on campus over lockdown we need to see additional mental health and wellbeing support provided in recognition of how challenging this period will be.»

She added: «For too many months, students have been at the whim of ever-changing guidance and rules, often expecting them to adhere to tighter restrictions than the rest of the population.

«Not only is this fundamentally unfair, it is hugely damaging for students’ mental health and finances, with the uncertainty making it harder for many to access education. This must change.»

A Universities UK (UUK) spokeswoman said: «As the universities minister has made clear in her letters to vice-chancellors and to students, students should remain at university and teaching, learning and student support should continue.

«Universities and Government recognise the importance of face-to-face teaching and learning activities in Covid-secure facilities for students’ education, terbaik sumatera mental health and wellbeing. This will include libraries and learning spaces remaining open.»

How many test kits can I get?

The Postal Service said each residential household is eligible for four free at-home rapid antigen COVID-19 tests. That means only one person per address will be able to place an order for the free tests — even if you have more than four people living in your home.

Can I choose which brand of test I want?

No, there’s not an option to choose which brand of test you want. All tests will be at-home rapid antigen tests authorized by the Food and Drug Administration.

What are some problems with ordering free test kits in the mail?

The USPS site has had some difficulties recognizing certain addresses, especially for apartment buildings, multifamily homes or residences connected to commercial properties. Since households are limited to four free tests, some residents of buildings with multiple units have been locked out due to a neighbor’s previous order.

The Postal Service has said that addresses not registered as multiunit buildings may lead to difficulties. Some users have reported that adding an apartment number in the main address line, rather than in the section for apartment number, enabled them to order.

In the , White House Coronavirus Response Coordinator Jeff Zients explained: «I want to clarify that almost every resident in an apartment is able to order a test. US Postal Service is seeing a very limited number of cases where addresses that are not registered as multi-unit buildings within its database, and they’re working to fix that issue or are helping people through that process.»

According to the Postal Service, those still having trouble placing orders should  or call 800-ASK-USPS.

Also, cold weather might be a possible problem with mailed COVID-19 tests. Brief exposure to freezing temperatures won’t damage at-home tests, but leaving them out in the cold for several days could. Be sure to track your package and bring it inside quickly if you live in a cold climate.

Covid infections are falling in the U

Covid infections are falling in the U.S.for the first time since the Omicron variant erupted at the end of 2021, with cases falling at least 10 percent in over the past seven days as former Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Scott Gottlieb saying that there is hope on the horizon that infections will drop even lower and that the virus will enter an endemic state in the near future.

Gottlieb’s predictions are the opposite of what Dr Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, predicted during a conference earlier this week — when he said there was potential for another resistant strain to emerge in the future.

The U.S.recorded 721,651 new cases on Monday, a steep fall from the 1.364 million cases reported last Monday. America’s new daily case average has also dropped 10 percent over the past seven days, from 766,939 to 684,457.

A DailyMail.com analysis of Johns Hopkins University data found there were 717,874 new cases recorded between midnight Monday and midnight Tuesday.Monday is often the day when reported case counts are highest as lagging figures from the weekend are finally reported.

Last week’s 1.364 million cases recorded on Monday was the highest single day case total the nation ever recorded. This week’s total was affected by the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday, where many local governments and municipalities were closed and did not fully report cases. It is likely that some cases shift to Tuesday this week instead.

But Covid cases have been plunging for days in those states hardest hit by Omicron when it first arrived in the US in early December, suggesting the latest phase pandemic could really be drawing to a close.

Recent trends in case growth, combined with the more mild nature of the Omicron variant compared to its predecessors, has many hopeful that Covid will soon become endemic. If it reaches endemic stage, humans will be able to live normal lives with controlled circulation of the virus — similar to the flu.

Gottlieb, who is also a current board member at Pfizer, told that unless the virus dramatically shifts from its current state, it will likely enter an endemic state in the foreseeable future.

‘I think the base case is that this signals the end of the pandemic phase of this virus,’ Gottlieb said.

His claim is backed up by figures coming out of the UK and South Africa.

In the UK, cases are continuing to decline after a massive surge struck the nation last month. The country recorded 84,429 new cases on Monday, and the daily case average has fallen to around the 100,000 mark — and will likely only fall further in the coming days.

South Africa is now recording less than 5,000 new COVID cases per day after reaching the heights of more than 23,000 per day only a few weeks ago.

In order for Covid to continue as a pandemic, another major shift in the virus’s nature would have to occur. He said that this type of dramatic shift would be unlikely, though it many experts did not see a highly transmissible, vaccine resistant, variant like Omicron emerging after Delta.

‘The worrisome scenario is that you get something that’s divergent evolution like Omicron did.Something that’s dramatically different than the variants that are circulating right now,’ he said.

‘Most people think that’s unlikely to happen but most people felt that was unlikely to happen before and that Delta would be the dominant lineage, and then Omicron came along, it had been mutating in a sequestered pocket somewhere and re-emerged into the human circulation.’

On the other hand,  warned at a virtual even that a there is potential for a new strain of Covid to emerge that evades the natural immunity provided by previous Covid infection, putting the world even further away from the endemic stage.

    <div class="mol-e

‘We’ve never seen a coronavirus undergo shift, where you’ve seen a dramatic change in the virus itself and the strain of the virus. What you’ve seen is these viruses undergo drift,’ Gottlieb said, explaining how these new variant emerge.

‘And that’s in fact what we’ve seen. We’ve seen this virus continue to drift and undergo gradual evolution, and that’s how we’ve gotten these new variants.’

Dr Scott Gottlieb (pictured), former director of the FDA, said Tuesday that he does not expect Covid to make another major shift beyond Omicron, and the endemic stage of the virus could be around the corner

Dr Scott Gottlieb (pictured), former director of the FDA, said Tuesday that he does not expect Covid to make another major shift beyond Omicron, and the endemic stage of the virus could be around the corner

Whenever a pathogen jumps from one host to another, pts terbaik sumatera it begins to replicate itself.Every time it has another chance to replicate, there is another chance a virus will slightly mutate. A vast majority of mutations individually do not have any impact on the science of the virus. When mutations begin to stack on each other, though, they start to caused problems.

The Omicron strain is the mutated version of Covid discovered yet, with more than 50 mutations, including dozens on the spike protein. Its mutations have allowed for it to rapidly transmit around the world and evade protection provided by the existing vaccines.

Variants usually come from a base lineage, and continue to mutate from there.Gottlieb expects Omicron to become that base lineage, but is not totally discounting Delta.

‘We’re gonna have a dominant strain and future mutations will occur within that lineage and Omicron may be it. It may be Delta. It’s unclear,’ he said.

‘I think the conventional wisdom right now is that its likely to be Omicron and that we’re gonna be formulating vaccines against that variant going forward.’

Either way, Gottlieb still expects the virus to evolve — just as the flu does — in a situation that could require the use of regular Covid shots to control the virus.

‘[The virus is] gonna continue to evolve too, in ways that try to partially evade out immune system, and its probably going to achieve some new fitness level and that’s why we’re gonna have to re-inoculate the population at least for a period of time,’ he said.

Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Disease, warned that Covid becoming endemic may not be as likely as many say at the  Monday.

The nation’s Covid czar warned that a new variant could emerge that makes ‘natural vaccination’ — or immunity via previous infection — ineffective. If that does happen, then humans will not be able to enter an endemic stage of Covid.

His warning runs counter to the positive predictions coming from Gottlieb and from some officials in the UK who believe that the virus could have a ‘flu-type’ relationship with people by the end of the year based on its current spread.

Dr Anthony Fauci (pictured) warned that even if Omicron - which has caused a massive surge in new cases worldwide but is not as severe or deadly as its predecessors - is the final strain of COVID, it will likely become endemic

Dr Anthony Fauci (pictured) warned that even if Omicron — which has caused a massive surge in new cases worldwide but is not as severe or deadly as its predecessors — is the final strain of COVID, it will likely become endemic

‘I would hope that that’s the case. But that would only be the case if we don’t get another variant that eludes the immune response of the prior variant,’ Fauci said.

Fauci has previously made grim projections about new COVID variants, and was ultimately proven correct about a variant like Omicron emerging.

In August, when the Delta variant was first rising in the US, Fauci warned that with transmission of Covid so rampant it was likely that a vaccine resistant variant .

Months later, than variant did come about, when South African health officials discovered the highly infectious Omicron variant in late November.

He fears that there is a chance another variant emerges that has mutated in a way that allows it to get around protection provided by recovering from Omicron.

COVID becoming endemic as a result of Omicron has become a common theory among health experts and officials, and has served as a beacon of hope for the population suffering through the recent surge.

Omicron is burning through people so quickly, causing daily COVID cases to hit records almost everywhere in the world, that it could soon run out of people to infect.

According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Omicron accounts for 98 percent of active cases in the US, almost entirely pushing out the much more severe Delta variant.

Add that COVID booster shots have been found to be effective against the variant and the number of people left for the variant to infect is quickly running out.

Once it does burn out, infections will continue at a lower rate, and due to the mild nature of the variant and regular availability of vaccines in the developed world it should be possible to control the virus.

Fauci said reaching that level is what would be needed for COVID to be shifted from a pandemic to endemic.

‘Control means you have it present but it is present at a level that does not disrupt society,’ he said. ‘That’s my definition of what endemicity would mean.’

At this point, life would basically be back to normal.Lockdown measures, masking and vaccine mandates would no longer be needed even though the virus is still circulating.

‘It’s not going to be that you’ll eliminate this disease completely. But hopefully, it will be at such a low level that it doesn’t disrupt our normal social, economic and other interactions with each other,’ Fauci said.

‘To me, that’s what the new normal is.’

Whether Covid develops into an endemic or not is still in the air, but in the short term, America’s Covid situation is starting to look better by the day.

Covid cases are finally on the decline in New York. The Empire state was hit hard and fast by the Omicron variant last month, with cases jumping ten-fold in a matter of weeks. After peaking at 40,000 new cases per day in early January, the state is now recording a 27 percent decrease in new cases over the past two weeks.

The state was once the leader in infection rate in the U.S., but has now fallen out of the top 15 states with 249 of every 100,000 residents testing positive for the virus daily.

Neighboring New Jersey, which was also hit hard by the new variant, has seen a similar dip in its caseload.

The Garden state has recorded a 28 percent drop in new cases over the past 14 days, the biggest drop of any state in America. Like New York, New Jersey experienced a massive seven-fold case increase when Omicron first arrived in the U.S. early last month.

It seems that the surge is finally starting to burn out.

Others states that were once among the nationwide leaders in case growth are seeing daily cases start to slow as well, like Illinois, Maryland, Florida and Georgia.

Declining case growth nationwide is providing even more evidence that the Omicron-fueled surge is starting to reach its peak. While the MLK day holiday also affected case change counts as well, many states were already trending downwards.
